Paul DraytonMy coyote-hunting career began while growing up on a ranch north of O'Neill, Nebraska when I was 15 years old. I received a coyote call for Christmas that year and went out to give it a try. I parked my dad's pickup out of site behind a hill on a section line road near the ranch (dad didn't know I'd left the property since I didn't have a drivers license) and lay down in some tall grass in the fence line. I started blowing into the call not having any idea what I was doing and to my amazement a coyote came charging in from out of the pasture. I was so shocked I don't even remember cocking the hammer on my old open site 30-30 and pulling the trigger. Of course I didn't even come close to hitting him but I was hooked for life. From that moment on I became obsessed with hunting the song dog.

Since that time I have spent countless hours in the field learning all I can about the coyote and honing my calling skills. On the average, my partners and I shoot around 75 coyotes a year utilizing howling, prey distress and electronic calls.

I now reside in Mobridge, South Dakota and work for the Natural Resources Conservation Service as a District Conservationist. I use most of my vacation time in the pursuit of coyotes but also hunt deer, elk, antelope and upland game. I also run a trap line every fall catching all sorts of furbearers.
