Q: I live in MN just wondering if you have tried or tested the new fox pro caller that is priced under $200 I think its called the spit fire. seems to be reasonably priced
"pros & cons"??
A: Sorry to say, we haven't used the Spitfire yet because we have had too much snow to get to our hunting areas. We have seen the Spitfire and it certainly looks like it will be a great call. It is very affordable and Foxpro produces quality products while providing awesome customer service. Even without actually using the call, we recommend it, especially with the price. Unfortunately we can not comment on specific pros and cons of its usage.

A: They can definitely see that far and many, many times farther. If you have called 2 coyotes in 4 trips in PA, you are doing alot of things right.

As far as genetics, many theories are out there and its possible there are some wolf genes in coyotes. But also likely to have domestic canine as well.

Q: have you guys ever hunted in north dakota if not shoot me a email and i will get ya on around 10,000 acres of private land no presure. im not a guide just love huntin with who ever will go. awesome website
A: Thank you very much for the compliment on the website. We have hunted some parts of ND. Where are you located?

Q: in your opinion are distress calls "meal calls" just as effective or less effective during breeding season? live in mn planing yote huntin trip to either ND or SD any suggestions what area or "city" to hunt around???? Dickenson,Bismark
A: Distress calls work at all times of the year and can be very effective during the breeding season as well. North Dakota and South Dakota have good coyote numbers this year and we have heard especially good population reports in the eastern parts.

Q: where would be the best place to hunt coyote hunting in south dakota?and would a 220 swift be a well rounded caliber for coyote and fox hunting.
A: A .220 would certainly be a good round if you are hoping for either fox or coyote. The NE part of the state has a mixture of fox and coyote and we have been hearing that the coyote population especially is very good this year. Depending on where you are located, that would be a good area to look at.

Q: i see some of your team have tube extensions on their optics, are those to stop reflection?, and are they store bought or homemade? THANKS JEFF
A: The extensions we have have on our scopes are factory made by Leupold. They work exceptionally. It eliminates reflection back to the coyotes and if you have ever tried to shoot towards a rising or setting sun, they will eliminate the glare in that situation as well. Another reason we love Leupold scopes...they have fantastic accessories that fit perfectly and function equally as well.

The camo paint on the scope is a do-it-yourself addition.

Q: I use a coyote lone howl to start my calling. Then i go into a cottontail distress call. I was thinking about using a coyote decoy along with my cottontail rabbit. Do you think it would be feasible to use a coyote decoy? Thanks from Pa.
A: Coyote decoys can be used and can be effective. You might consider that some coyotes may be subordinates in that area and a coyote decoy may keep them from coming in to your calling sounds. You might want to try a rabbit decoy or a Foxpro "jack in the box" decoy which has movement and can be very helpful.

A: It sounds like you have a good start on being a successful coyote caller. Other than the wind, there is alot that goes into a successful stand selection. Try to read the terrain and study maps to determine where the coyotes might come from and how to make sure you can see in that direction. Coyotes are a tough animal to fool, so don't expect success every time out. Especially if you are limited to one area.

A: If you are calling in grey's, you probably just have more of them than you do coyotes. You are doing something write as you are calling predators so we wouldn't change too much about what your doing. It might just be a matter of a coyote beating the grey to your call.
We use 22-250's and don't think you can do better for an all around coyote caliber.

Q: I am just getting started into useing hounds to hunt coyotes. Can anyone give me any ideas as how to go about training my plott hound pups when their are of age.
A: We do not use hounds when we hunt coyotes. Unfortunately, we can't offer you too many tips. We recommend you check out the local library or online search engines to find articles on training your dogs.

Q: I am trying to call coyotes in semi-open Iowa farmland. Timber mixed next to open cropland. I have had a sucessful hunters show me the ropes with no luck for any of us, and they are not sure why. Not much info, but this rookie will take any ideas!!
A: We always recommend you get our videos and study how we set up and choose a stand. This will shorten your learning curve and not only provide you with exciting video, but help you become a better coyote hunter quickly. Also, it never hurts to see coyotes coming in to a call and see them up close, even on video, to reduce the "coyote fever" when you call one in.
There are so many things that go into being a successful caller. Stand selection and all that goes with it is the most common place beginners make mistakes.

Q: Has anyone tried using the Magnumlite MLR 1722m.? I know it is a little small for coyote hunting but it is what I use in a populated area. I sure would like to know how it shoots. Thank you.
A: We haven't used this gun, but agree, it is a little too small to be effective on coyotes. Maybe you could use a shotgun if you are worried about hunting in an area where you don't have alot of space.

Q: where can I sell yote pelts in new mexico? thanks for all the tips and advice
A: Contact your local Trappers Assc. for possible fur buyers in your area. They usually have a working knowledge of who is buying in your area.

top of page
Q: What brand of scope light would you recommend for night time coyote calling and what would be the choice of yards of sight? Thanks
A: We don't hunt at night so dont have experience with scope lights. We would suggest using a good, name brand light and trying it out to see what range it is capable of illuminating. Then sight your rifle in for that distance or slightly nearer.

Q: when do coyotes have their young?is it easier to call them at that time of year in wisconsin?
A: Coyotes usually have their young in the spring of the year. They may actually cover less of their territory when they are staying near their den site so it isn't always the best time to call. Usually coyotes respond the best in the January, February months when prey is scarce.

Q: My names dave I am from michigan and i am going to start yote huntin this year but i live in bay city and theres none around here, so just wondering wheres the closest place bye me to hunt for coyotes in michigan, apprecitate any help
A: We have never hunted Mich. but we recommend you contact your local Game Conservation Officer who should be able to tell you where a huntable coyote population is.

Q: is there a better time to go coyote hunting in pa? also if you go when it is dark should you have a red light?
A: If night hunting is legal in your state, it is probably the best time to go but there really is not a BAD time to coyote hunt. A red light is not necessary. You can be successful with a white light as well, although some of the more wary coyotes may be a little less leery of the red lens.

A: Set up near where you think the coyote is spending his days and use a pup distress call just before sundown. He should respond and you can stop the carnage.

Q: I was just wondering if it woulg be better to buy manual calls or download call sounds to an mp3 player and play them on a speaker? Thanks.
A: Both sounds have advantages, with the hand calls offering flexibility and also the satisfaction of making the sounds yourself. The electronics require less skill in making the sound but don't guarantee success. The quality of the sound is important but the stand selection and all that goes into the set up is most critical to success.

Q: can u just stay in one area for evening hunt say 2 hrs and there is 10,000 acres next to me un developed how many coyotes would u guess is on that land bout 4,000 is timber thanks
A: You can certainly stay in one area for as long as you can take the weather or inactivity. In heavily pressured areas, it is often more effective to stay on stand longer.
We figure you can count on having about 8-10 coyotes on 10,000 acres in your area. Possibly more depending on food and hunting pressure.

Q: im in kansas near lawrence home of jayhawks limited on moving around can move some but not like western kansas or south dakota plenty of coyotes have plenty timber and crops its jan 15 2010 using remote caller no coyotes any suggestions?
A: If you are using a remote caller, then its not a problem with the sounds. Most likely its the details in your setup and stand selection. We always suggest watching our DVD's to see how we select stands and to shorten the learning curve on coyote behavior. Also, watch for an upcoming Seminar DVD which will go into great detail explaining our techniques so that you can use them in your situations.

Q: Hi me and my dad have been trying to hunt coyotes in northeast missouri for last two years and have had zero luck! We've had good luck in illinois but not here. Any tips for us to try in missouri we're all out of ideas?
A: Coyotes have some different geographical traits, but basically they react the same no matter where you hunt. Especially when you are hunting in the same region. If you aren't having the same success, it could be to many things, but hunting pressure, prey availability, or coyote populations would be the most likely reasons.

In the more challenging areas, be extra careful about approach and stand selection. If you aren't sure you have mastered these areas of coyote hunting, you might want to check out our videos to see what works especially well in our heavily hunted areas.

Q: I live in eastern west virginia and the terrian is very wooded and alot of hills and would like to know how to locate and identify coyote dens.
A: Coyotes can use a variety of different things for denning structure. They will often use many different den sites in one year of raising pups. The best way to identify a den is to find abundant coyote tracks or signs of heavy usage in an area of caves, holes, hollow logs, or even just very thick brush or rock piles.

Q: hi, haven't gotten an answer yet..the question is what color are coyotes eyes at night when a million watt spotlight is shined on them?
like your sight
A: We don't use lights in SD to hunt coyotes, so going back to our younger days in Nebr. we usually thought a coyote's eyes were yellow or light gold color.
You should always clearly identify what your target is when hunting and make sure you KNOW it is a coyote by visual identification and not just by eye color.
