I want to coyote hunt in southern Minnesota. Is is legal to shoot them with a high-powered rifle, say a .243? For deer in south its shotgun only.
Thanks,
Bruce |
| A: |
We recommend you ask your local game officer about the laws for your area of the state. He/She may also be able to give you some insight into where the coyotes may be found in your area as well.

| Q: |
I made a small bait pile(deer trimmings) in some mature pines and hemlock area here in NW Pennsylvania. I came back 1 week later to check it out and found coyote tracks everywhere. How can I call this location? I'm thinking about using portable treestand |
| A: |
A tree stand would work fine. The first thing you need to do is select a good stand location so that you can get a shot if you do call a coyote. They are in the area, so stand selection will deterimine your success, as it does for most coyote callers. Factors in stand selection are too numerous for a short answer. We recommend watching our videos to see how we choose the proper stand.

Im just getting started with the coyote hunting and i live in the Rocky Mountains i have done it a couple times before bu has no luck at all. I need some advice to try to get some of the little bogers. |
| A: |
Hunting in the mountains can be challenging, but you should remember that coyotes behave much the same way regardless of where you hunt. Many of the same things that make us successful will be key to you increasing your success as well. We will soon release a seminar DVD which should be very helpful in explaining our tactics. When combined with watching those tactics in action, you should have a very good idea of what it takes to call coyotes.

I live in southern missouri and am really getting into coyote hunting/trapping....i was wondering what the regulations and seasons are for hunting coyotes at night in missouri, and also if there is a specific season for them?? thanks! |
| A: |
We haven't hunted in Missouri, so we are not familiar with the state regulations. You should contact your local game official and they will help you out on the regs plus probably give you a good idea where there is a good population of coyotes.

| Q: |
I understand you use motorola radios and have several different ear pieces depending on what you need for the day.
Can you be more specific on the brands/models of the different earpieces? |
| A: |
The ear pieces we are using are custom molded by EAR Inc. They incorporated our existing ear piece and mic system into their custom molds. They are comfortable enough to wear continuously for multiple days of hunting. They also afford some hearing protection when shooting.
They are a great company that can do just about anything you need to help your hunting success.

| Q: |
I hear coyotes near my house every night, and the next day i see alot of prints, but everytime I try to call them in I can't get them out during the day. How can I get these yotes to come out? |
| A: |
There is alot that goes into calling coyotes other than just having coyotes nearby. You should consider wind, terrain, hunting pressure, etc. when you think about calling coyotes. Coyotes are very intelligent and adaptable, so it's a challenge to fool one.
We would suggest studying our videos to see what has worked for us over many, many years and then adopting our techniques to your area. There really is no simple, "magic" answer.

| Q: |
hunt in pa many yote tracks in the woods (snow) 4 times out called in 2 yotes. one hit the ground, the second one came runnin in to only 75 yards to the call.just kept runnin why would he not come all the way, can they see that far do east yotes have wolf |
| A: |
They can definitely see that far and many, many times farther. If you have called 2 coyotes in 4 trips in PA, you are doing alot of things right.
As far as genetics, many theories are out there and its possible there are some wolf genes in coyotes. But also likely to have domestic canine as well.

I live in MN just wondering if you have tried or tested the new fox pro caller that is priced under $200 I think its called the spit fire. seems to be reasonably priced
"pros & cons"?? |
| A: |
Sorry to say, we haven't used the Spitfire yet because we have had too much snow to get to our hunting areas. We have seen the Spitfire and it certainly looks like it will be a great call. It is very affordable and Foxpro produces quality products while providing awesome customer service. Even without actually using the call, we recommend it, especially with the price. Unfortunately we can not comment on specific pros and cons of its usage.

| Q: |
in your opinion are distress calls "meal calls" just as effective or less effective during breeding season? live in mn planing yote huntin trip to either ND or SD any suggestions what area or "city" to hunt around???? Dickenson,Bismark |
| A: |
Distress calls work at all times of the year and can be very effective during the breeding season as well. North Dakota and South Dakota have good coyote numbers this year and we have heard especially good population reports in the eastern parts.

| Q: |
where would be the best place to hunt coyote hunting in south dakota?and would a 220 swift be a well rounded caliber for coyote and fox hunting. |
| A: |
A .220 would certainly be a good round if you are hoping for either fox or coyote. The NE part of the state has a mixture of fox and coyote and we have been hearing that the coyote population especially is very good this year. Depending on where you are located, that would be a good area to look at.

| Q: |
i see some of your team have tube extensions on their optics, are those to stop reflection?, and are they store bought or homemade? THANKS JEFF |
| A: |
The extensions we have have on our scopes are factory made by Leupold. They work exceptionally. It eliminates reflection back to the coyotes and if you have ever tried to shoot towards a rising or setting sun, they will eliminate the glare in that situation as well. Another reason we love Leupold scopes...they have fantastic accessories that fit perfectly and function equally as well.
The camo paint on the scope is a do-it-yourself addition.

| Q: |
I use a coyote lone howl to start my calling. Then i go into a cottontail distress call. I was thinking about using a coyote decoy along with my cottontail rabbit. Do you think it would be feasible to use a coyote decoy? Thanks from Pa. |
| A: |
Coyote decoys can be used and can be effective. You might consider that some coyotes may be subordinates in that area and a coyote decoy may keep them from coming in to your calling sounds. You might want to try a rabbit decoy or a Foxpro "jack in the box" decoy which has movement and can be very helpful.

| Q: |
Hi, i hunt in an old cow pasture in Georgia and i know there are songdogs around. i carry a 30.06 with 150 gr and a 12 ga. with 0B i set up with the wind in my face or at least a cross wind and i use a rabbit distress call but cant seem to call any dogs i |
| A: |
It sounds like you have a good start on being a successful coyote caller. Other than the wind, there is alot that goes into a successful stand selection. Try to read the terrain and study maps to determine where the coyotes might come from and how to make sure you can see in that direction. Coyotes are a tough animal to fool, so don't expect success every time out. Especially if you are limited to one area.

| Q: |
i live in southern new york an i have heard coyotes at night but every time i set up we call in gray fox why is that should i change my call or should i get a new one i have a jonny stewart casset player and what caliber should i use i been useing my30-06 |
| A: |
If you are calling in grey's, you probably just have more of them than you do coyotes. You are doing something write as you are calling predators so we wouldn't change too much about what your doing. It might just be a matter of a coyote beating the grey to your call.
We use 22-250's and don't think you can do better for an all around coyote caliber.

I am just getting started into useing hounds to hunt coyotes. Can anyone give me any ideas as how to go about training my plott hound pups when their are of age. |
| A: |
We do not use hounds when we hunt coyotes. Unfortunately, we can't offer you too many tips. We recommend you check out the local library or online search engines to find articles on training your dogs.

i've lost 5 dogs all puppies to a coydog or the biggest yote in california he is huge they are always penned up but the kids never check to see if they got out.. the first couple was over a month period most mornings the last was middle of the day what 2d |
| A: |
Set up near where you think the coyote is spending his days and use a pup distress call just before sundown. He should respond and you can stop the carnage.

| Q: |
when do coyotes have their young?is it easier to call them at that time of year in wisconsin? |
| A: |
Coyotes usually have their young in the spring of the year. They may actually cover less of their territory when they are staying near their den site so it isn't always the best time to call. Usually coyotes respond the best in the January, February months when prey is scarce.

| Q: |
Has anyone tried using the Magnumlite MLR 1722m.? I know it is a little small for coyote hunting but it is what I use in a populated area. I sure would like to know how it shoots. Thank you. |
| A: |
We haven't used this gun, but agree, it is a little too small to be effective on coyotes. Maybe you could use a shotgun if you are worried about hunting in an area where you don't have alot of space.

where can I sell yote pelts in new mexico? thanks for all the tips and advice |
| A: |
Contact your local Trappers Assc. for possible fur buyers in your area. They usually have a working knowledge of who is buying in your area.

| Q: |
What brand of scope light would you recommend for night time coyote calling and what would be the choice of yards of sight? Thanks |
| A: |
We don't hunt at night so dont have experience with scope lights. We would suggest using a good, name brand light and trying it out to see what range it is capable of illuminating. Then sight your rifle in for that distance or slightly nearer.

| Q: |
is there a better time to go coyote hunting in pa? also if you go when it is dark should you have a red light? |
| A: |
If night hunting is legal in your state, it is probably the best time to go but there really is not a BAD time to coyote hunt. A red light is not necessary. You can be successful with a white light as well, although some of the more wary coyotes may be a little less leery of the red lens.

| Q: |
I was just wondering if it woulg be better to buy manual calls or download call sounds to an mp3 player and play them on a speaker? Thanks. |
| A: |
Both sounds have advantages, with the hand calls offering flexibility and also the satisfaction of making the sounds yourself. The electronics require less skill in making the sound but don't guarantee success. The quality of the sound is important but the stand selection and all that goes into the set up is most critical to success.
